‘Happy’ BirthdayAs the days go by, the cases go high, the pandemic looming over us doesn’t seem to go anywhere. The statistics look grim and as much as we would like to normalize this, can we really?

While we wait in hope for this be over and far from reality, the only respite we have in this unprecedented time is the little joy of celebrating and capturing moments. Should we feel the twinges of guilt in wishing a loved one a ‘Happy’ birthday while many battle, a not-so-happy ailment for their life, health and well being. On my birthday, I thought, do I bake a cake or spend that money, albeit a small amount, on helping someone who has lost a job, a home or in need of medication? The magnitude of the celebration versus the extenuating circumstances; am I caught between living in the moment and philanthropy. Who knows- but here we are.

I have decided to send positive vibes to the ones suffering by celebrating what is now. Celebrate self-isolation, celebrate being ‘stuck’ with your siblings, celebrate watching sitcom re-runs, celebrate playing monopoly for the umpteenth time, celebrate walking down memory lanes, celebrate because there are so many who would rather do what you are doing, now.

Write a letter to yourself 10 years from now. Many of us would have answered this question in a job interview. Who and where do you aspire to be in life 10 years from now? Will you finally take that leap of faith? Que sera sera..
